A friend was fired for being gay... and I think it sucks.
The short story is that he was a really good college debater who had lined up a job teaching debate in Korea.
He was called by the person who hired him because it came to their attention that he's gay.
He was told he wasn't welcome.... later they called him back to tell him that he could take the job, but that the atmosphere would be hostile.
This sucks -- my friend was planning to leave in 7 weeks. He got rid of everything and had invested money in language lessons etc. It's also a simple fact that he'd have been a fantastic instructor. Their bigotry is their loss.
Also -- he's making a pretty public deal about this. I hope they can't get anybody to fill that position.

OMG!!! OK, he needs to contact the EEOC NOW and file a claim. This is wrong on so many levels.
Being a debater, he has about a billion friends who are lawyers. The problem is that the job is in Korea -- teaching for a Korean company/school, so they aren't bound by the EEOC.
Personally, I hope he tells the story to enough people and they won't be able to get anybody to work for them. I'd love to hear stories of candidates offered jobs and declining them because they won't work for bigots.
I hope he names the school AND the a**hole administrator who called him.
Name names. It's one way to get some accountability.
I can imagine the debate world is small enough and the pool of people interested enough in going right now to be pretty limited that he might be able to make a difference. I hope they don't find anyone else.
That's kind of my thought -- especially sine most of their recent hires are from parliamentary debate.
This is the kind of thing that makes my hands shake with rage.
Also, my word verification word is "fighthes." Yeah, I got a case of the fighties myself.
