Cat question...

So, hubby and I were talking this morning about the big black and white cat that hated me, wanted to kill me and was trying to move me out of the house... and I said something like, "he was purring, but it was a mean purr".

Hubby thinks it is impossible for a cat to purr in a mean way... Hubby also denies the black and white cat had any malice towards me...

thoughts?

Ok, so I've got to agree with hubby on this one.

Cats can purr because they're hungry or lovey or content, but I think if they're angry they don't purr. They may growl... Or it is possible for them to be irritable and yet to purr because they are hungry (thus to give the mean looks while puring), but I don't think that they can actually be actively mean and angry at you and purr.

But what do I know? Kitty cats do what they will, and we stupid humans cannot know what they mean by what they do.

Given what my cat Loki does, I think it's entirely possible. He doesn't seem to be able to stop himself from purring when you hold him, no matter how pissed off he is. It's quite funny, actually.

OneCat is famous for giving mixed signals - he'll rub against your calf and purr, and then glare at you and hiss. He can definitely give a menacing purr, though I don't think that's very typically feline. Cats also purr to indicate submission if they feel threatened, so maybe you could get some sort of passive-aggressive angry purr?

I guess I'm with Dr. Crazy - kitty cats do what they will. :)
